    About the Book

The author argues forcefully, supported ably by citations from the scriptures as well as their interpretation by scholars, how Islam has by and large been misinterpreted as a code of regression. From explaining how banking is allowed by the religion to the redundancy of the burqa, from providing the real definition of kafir to enumerating the rights of married and divorced partners in a couple, from putting jihad in the correct perspective to questioning the authenticity of any story that goes in the name of Hadith… Asghar Ali Engineer offers an issue-by-issue rebuttal of the uneducated notion that Muslims are an obscurantist lot. Of course, he has no kind words for the ulema that earn the faith a bad name; he might well have stuck his neck out to invite their ire by lambasting their tendency to interpret the Qur’an in the most unlikely, yet convenient, manner that suits a patriarchal, male chauvinist and sectarian mindset.

Neither Allah nor His Prophet, the author insists, would approve of the injustice a motley group of monopolyists in the faith have unleashed on humanity. For all practical purposes, Islam is as modern as it gets.

    About The Book

Do Indians really care about India? questions Bill Koul, the author, an NRI who lives in Australia. With a rapidly increasing population, pollution, and irresponsible depletion of natural resources, India may potentially choke itself in the next couple of decades or so. He feels Mother India is struggling and cannot breastfeed any more people. Markets are flooded with adulterated fruits, vegetables and dairy products; fake and spurious medicines.

The Indian tendency to show off their wealth with wasteful expenditure at weddings is fuelling consumerism and corruption, in the process eroding traditional human values and sincerity in social interactions. At the political level, he holds the current Kashmiri leaders responsible for compromising the lives of their future generations by inciting young children to pelt stones at the security forces in the name of religion. He feels history may never forgive them. All these issues seem to act as termites or white ants, potentially undermining the foundations of the country. The Mainu Ki (why should I bother?) attitude of the average Indian must be replaced by a direct approach—timely, prudent, sincere and fearless—to tackle these issues. The author has in this book highlighted all the problems and listed out possible solutions for them.

    About The Book

Jangam (Movement) is the poignant tale of ordinary people who embarked on a great, unknown journey in the midst of WWII but whose bids for survival were thwarted as they battled Nature. Hardly any account of this massive calamity has been registered in India’s literature, says Debendranath Acharya in the late 1970s, in the preface to his Sahitya Akademi award-winning Assamese novel. During this migration an estimated 450,000-500,000 Burmese Indians walked to north-east India, fleeing from the Japanese advance and also from escalating ethnic violence in the Burmese theatre of war. ‘Corpses lay everywhere, and there were no jackals and vultures to pick them clean… All other forms of animal life seem to have abjured this pathway, save for scores of beautiful butterflies that cover the bodies in a sea of colour’, say contemporary foreign accounts of this exodus. Jangam is the only sustained fictional treatment of this long march.

    About the Book

The cocktail of subjects touched upon in Jinnah helped Hindus and Other Reflections may surprise some readers by their diversity. From a young boy questioning why with a galaxy of freedom fighters, we have Gandhi’s portrait on all our currency notes, especially when money was his last concern to how Jinnah actually helped Hindus. Why Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, who welcomed Muslim migrants with open arms, is today offering them 3000 Euros as a return package? Many of the essays ask truly relevant questions. According to the author the Babri Masjid should be called Babri maqbarah since it is not a masjid. How acute is the threat of Islamisation of Europe? What is the future of minorities in Pakistan? Why did Jinnah call the Aligarh Muslim University the ‘arsenal of Pakistan’? Prafull Goradia also analyses why Indians still prefer sarkari jobs over others and what the causes of the failure of State Capitalism are. In the essay ‘Cricket in Need of a Revolution’ the author is critical of the fact that India has only one competitive international cricket team. Almost the same players play Test matches, One-dayers as well as twenty-20s. Why? We overstrain these players and might even be risking the quality of their game. Every reader will find something of interest in this collection of essays.

JP MOVEMENT- EMERGENCY AND INDIA’S SECOND FREEDOM

    0

    About the Book

The country is reminded about JP today as never before. There is hopelessness and despair all around. Corruption has become a monster and people want change at all cost. Anna movement galvanized the nation against corruption but could not translate the support into an organized movement for social change. This book will guide and inspire those who want to become the instruments of change. It is a moving history about JP — how he came into the movement despite his failing health.

Noted poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar prayed to Lord Tirupati that the rest of his life be given to JP to lead the movement. Dinkar died in the lap of JP in Ramnath Goenka’s house and thus was born the JP Movement. This book is about: The deep-dark period of autocracy (1975-77) in India. Those were months of draconian laws, extinguished freedom, Gestapo-type arrests, severe Press censorship, forced sterilization and abject surrender marked by terror of the minions and slavery of the elites that made India a fascist-type police state.

The return of the sunlight of democracy due largely to the defiance of a 73-year old Jayaprakash Narayan, a congenital democrat. The Emergency was not only the defeat of JP and his movement against corruption, inflation and misrule, but also of the entire population that loved freedom. The state power of Indira Gandhi lost whereas the moral authority of JP won. Vulnerability of India’s institutions of governance and how effectively the President, Union Cabinet, Parliament, Supreme Court, Governors, State Assemblies, senior civil servants, police and intelligence agencies and the Press were manipulated by a dictatorial Prime Minister and exploited by her ‘unprincipled’ son. A new perspective on the movement in view of the classified papers accessed by the author.
